SEO 101 for Foxads

Foxads is a free online classified ads site where anything can be put on sale including jobs, cars, properties, pets, tickets, dating and more. Advertisers can pay a minimal fee to upgrade their online classified ad to a premium listing.

This article is a basic 101 tutorial regarding the SEO keyword research undertaken to optimise the home page on Foxads free online classified ads site:

1. We started by checking out our competitors. Going to their websites, reading their content, titles, headings and main text and assessing how well they are getting their message out.

We delved deeper use the "View Source" browser menu item to look at the HTML of their web pages and made a note of their page titles, alt tags, headings and meta description and meta keywords.

2. Then we applied this learning to the content optimisation on our own Foxads site - identifying our USPs (unique selling points) and listing the best keywords and key phrases.

3. We ran our keywords and key phrases through Google's Keyword Tool and it reported how popular our key phrases are and ranked alternatives for us to consider.

4. Google doesn't like to see too many key phrases on the home page, so we selected the top three performing key phrases for our index.html page on Foxads which included - ads classified - free online ads - online classified ads

And we used the lesser performing key phrases - free classified ads - free online classifieds - free online classified ads - within the other main landing pages on the site.

5. And then we got our SEO bloke in to implement and embed these key phrases into our home page HTML...


SEO is a very iterative process, so once we've got some results then we'll go back and refine, refine and refine again...
